Anne Morrell Shepherd
Anne Morrell Shepherd, 95, of Westfield, NJ, beloved wife, mother and grandmother passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, July 11, 2026. Anne was born and raised in Plainfield, NJ, to William and Margaret Morrell. She subsequently lived in Westfield, NJ, with her family for nearly 70 years.
Anne attended The Hartridge School for Girls in Plainfield, NJ, and graduated from Vermont College, Montpelier, VT, in 1950 after which she took part in the Experiment in International Living, spending time with a Dutch family in Holland. Anne attended secretarial school in Eastman, NY, and was employed at Alcoa Steam Ship Co. in NY, Staud Engineering in Watchung, NJ and both McHughs and Talbots in Westfield, NJ.
In 1954,Anne married her husband, William (Bill) Joseph Shepherd. They moved to Westfield in 1957.Anne was involved in community service fundraising for the YMCA, served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, and a tap dancer in numerous Grant School Talent Shows supporting the Parent Teacher Association. She was an active member of the Plainfield Junior League, Treasurer of the Plainfield Garden Club and a member of the Altar Guild, Choir and Vestry of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield.
An avid tennis and paddle tennis player as well as an accomplished golfer at Echo Lake Country Club, Anne won the Women’s President’s Cup Championship several times. Anne and her husband Bill traveled the world together and enjoyed hosting international exchange students from France. In 2017, Anne and Bill were honored by the Episcopal Diocese of New Jersey with an Evensong at the Trenton Cathedral for their contributions and commitment to the Episcopal Church. Together they raised three sons in the Westfield Public Schools and happily celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary last year.
Anne is predeceased by her brother, Hugh Morrell; her niece, Pamela Morrell; and her nephew, Richard Morrell. She is survived by her husband Bill, sons Peter (Denise) and Thomas (Stacey) of Westfield, as well as James (Karen) of Washington DC and seven grandchildren: Eleanor (Alex Nardozzi), William, Meredith, Keaton, Cate, Sydney and Charles. She is also survived by her niece Kristen Magod. A private burial will be followed by a memorial service at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, July 25, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to The Friends of Music at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield.
