In a showdown between the league’s first- and second-place teams, Swan Hotel overcame an early deficit to defeat Awnings Galore, 19-11 and clinch first place in the 60s Division. Awnings Galore struck first with four runs in the top of the first inning, but Swan answered immediately with six runs in the bottom half and never relinquished the lead. Two six-run innings over the first four frames powered Swan’s offense and set the tone for the remainder of the game.
Bone McMahon led the attack with two home runs, while Scott Mugele collected two hits, including a towering home run. Tom Ulichny, Bill D’Amico, Pat Douglas, and Marty Bernstein each enjoyed perfect nights at the plate, and Steve Barba earned the victory on the mound. Awnings Galore was paced on offense by John Tomasulo, who went 3-for-3 with a double. Jerry Isolda, Billy Hillyer, Tom Renner, Emil Cocca and Tom Beninato each added two hits in the losing effort.
Linwood Boys 21, KenilworthVFW 6 The Linwood Boys avenged an earlier loss to Kenilworth VFW in emphatic fashion, rolling to a 21-6 victory behind a relentless offensive attack. Linwood exploded for six runs in each of the first two innings and never looked back. Mike Hoffman, Chris Kaminski and Sal Ianniccone led the charge at the plate, powering the offense throughout the game.
Defensively, Jim McCollough and Joe Ciampi came up with outstanding catches in the outfield to help preserve Linwood’s commanding lead. Kenilworth’s lone offensive highlight came on a towering home run by Chris Paternostro, but it wasn’t enough to slow the Linwood Boys, who led from start to finish in a convincing win.
Rocky’s Bar & Grill 22, DeBellis Associates 7 Rocky’s erupted for 30 hits in a dominant, 22-7, victory over the never give up Debellis team, with the offense producing hits throughout the lineup. Leading the charge was Farlan Alusik, who was a perfect 3-for-3, crushing a grand slam, ripping two doubles, and driving in six RBI. Dennis Maluchnik finished 2-for-2, launching a home run and adding a triple to spark the offense. Chris “Smitty” Schmidt also enjoyed a flawless 3-for-3 day at the plate, collecting two triples and driving in two runs. The hit parade continued as Geno Raisley, Tomas Cruz, Steve Falco and Kevin Taylor each posted perfect 3-for-3 performances, while James added a 2-for-2 effort to cap off the relentless offensive attack.
Deegan Roofing19, Damage Inc 18 Deegan Roofing edged Damage Inc, 19-18, in eight innings at Rahway River Park, winning it on Tim Walsh’s walk-off single after Deegan scored three in the bottom of the 8th. Walsh led the offense with four hits, while John Rachko, Ralph Genova, Don Miller, Walt Korzeb, Pat Nigro and Bill Buteau added three hits apiece for the Roofers. Don Miller also homered.
Deegan jumped out 5-1 after one, but Damage responded with six in the second to make it 8-8. Damage tacked on three more in the third and held the lead until the bottom of the seventh, when Deegan pulled even to force extras. Under international tiebreaker rules, Deegan outscored Damage 3-2 in the eighth to seal it. For Damage Inc., Richie Merrette went 3-for-4 with a triple and a home run, and Scott Graham homered as well, going 2-for-4. Dave P. Handleman was a perfect 3-for-3, and both Dave Rothenberg and Arnando Calderon finished 3-for-4.
