Proposed Rules Will Destabilize Funding for Scientific Research
On May 8 of 2025, The Leader published my letter describing censoring in federal grants supporting biomedical research. I described the impossible task of summarizing my research regarding long established biological differences in male and female kidney disease incidence without using words that triggered increased scrutiny by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Words to avoid included “women, females, diverse, orientation, sex”, and even “belong”. Censorship extended far beyond biology involving sex differences – the phrase “diverse materials” impacted a Rutgers engineering grant.
