Teresa “Terry” McHugh

TerryMcHugh, Beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother

Teresa ”Terry” McHugh, 99, passed away peacefully in Bayonne, New Jersey, on Monday, May 18, 2026 surrounded by her loving family.

Born and raised in Bayonne, NJ, Terry attended Holy Family Academy and worked as an Executive Secretary at Westinghouse enjoying the technical challenges. She met her beloved husband Jack at the Jersey Shore and they married in 1961. They moved to Walnut Creek, CA, then eventually settled in Westfield, NJ, where they raised their family. Terry was a loving and supportive mother, who received great joy in raising her children. Terry took great pride in making home cooked dinners for her family, including lasagna, and baking Christmas cookies with her children. Once the children were grown, Terry worked at the Westfield Town Tax Assessor Office. Upon retirement, she moved to Four Seasons Mirage in Barnegat, NJ. She later moved back to Bayonne, NJ, to live with her sister in their childhood home.

Terry cherished times spent with her family and friends. She took great pride in providing for those she loved and creating a warm and welcoming home. Terry’s homes were always well organized and spotlessly clean. Everyone looked forward to getting together at Grandma’s house for Christmas every year. Anytime they visited, they knew the crystal candy dish would be full. She especially loved gathering everyone around her kitchen table for rousing games of Pit, cards, and Rummikub.

Terry truly enjoyed hosting her family over the Summer at her Mirage home in Barnegat, NJ. Visiting Grandma’s house was a favorite vacation destination for her grandchildren. Terry loved spending time with her family, getting early bird specials, playing shuffleboard, playing mini golf, swimming in the Mirage pool, eating nice fish dinners, telling jokes, and watching boats race in the Barnegat Bay while the sun set. Terry was feisty, energetic, and always looking forward to going on the next adventure. Terry enjoyed walking to the Barnegat lighthouse and staring at the light’s reflection in the glimmering sea while talking with her family.

Terry was predeceased by her husband, John “Jack” Francis McHugh, in 1999.

She is survived by her children, Carol Ann (Abbott), Beth Ann Magnotti (Phil) and John (Kathy); her cherished grandchildren, Brian, Erin, Mary, Michael, Katie and Nora; her sister, Clare Gannon and many loving relatives and friends.

A visitation was held at Dooley Colonial Home, 556WestfieldAvenue, Westfield, NJ 07090, on Thursday, May 21, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church, 1600 Rahway Avenue, Westfield, NJ 07090, on Friday, May 22, 2026, at 10 a.m. Interment followed at St. Gertrude Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to St. Joseph Social Service Center, Elizabeth, NJ, sjeliz.org
