Catherine Maravetz

Catherine “Cathy” Lois Maravetz, age 92, of Westfield, NJ, left this earth Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Overlook Hospital in Summit. Born in Chicago, IL, she was the daughter of Edward and Rita LaPlante.

A graduate of Creighton University with a degree in Chemistry, Cathy was a devoted educator, volunteer, and longtime member of St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield. She served as both teacher and director at Christopher Academy Montessori School and dedicated many years to volunteer work with organizations including the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless and Center for Hope Hospice.

Cathy’s greatest joy was her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who created a warm and welcoming home and shared her love of learning, science, nature, and travel with her children and grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her parents; brothers William, Eugene, and Gregory LaPlante; and her sister Colette Maravetz. She is survived by her beloved husband, Les Maravetz; children Mary Rita Louis (Greg), Paul Thomas Maravetz (Laura), Renée Michelle Powley (Jeff), and Justin John Maravetz (Rosemary); eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; brother Justin LaPlante; and many extended family members and friends. Visitation will be held Friday, May 29, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Ave., Westfield NJ 07090. A Funeral Mass will take place Saturday, May 30, at 10 a.m. at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Cathy’s memory to the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless or Center for Hope Hospice & Palliative Care.
