Mental Health Council Book Club at Westfield Library

WESTFIELD – The Westfield Memorial Library, located at 550 E. Broad Street, is partnering with two local organizations to bring new events to the library.

The Westfield Mental Health Council, in partnership with the Westfield Memorial Library, invites readers to join a mental health–themed book discussion group. During the first gathering on Thursday, February 26 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., the group will discuss Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb. Copies of the book are available to check out, in advance, at the library.

Also on Thursday, February 26 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the Adult School presents “A Lookback through American History through the Lens of Black Baseball.” Learn the story of racism and racial discrimination in America told through the lens of Black baseball.

The resilience and pride of African Americans in the face of the horrors of racial injustice and systemic discrimination perpetrated by segregation cannot be understated. Segregation era baseball was a bedrock of the Black community. It gave birth to a vibrant cultural, political, social, and economic ecosystem that challenged racism.

When Jackie Robinson broke the MLB color line, it was a seminal moment in baseball and a turning point in the civil rights movement – paving the way for racial equality and setting the stage for civil rights legislation such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

This program is free and open to the public; however, interested individuals must register through The Adult School on their website www.theadultschool.org, or by calling 973.443.9222.

TheAdult School of the Chathams, Madison & Florham Park provides affordable, high-quality lifelong learning programs that are interesting, informative, useful, and fun. From advanced subjects in language and technology to basic classes in the arts, hobbies, and everything in between, The Adult School is designed to accommodate anyone who seeks to keep learning and wants to do so with the guidance of a highly qualified teacher in the presence of other like-minded people.

The library is offering a special testing program for sophomores and juniors on Saturday, February 28 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The purpose of the free SAT/ACT Diagnostic Comparison Test is to help make the college prep journey as easy and efficient as possible.

This combined test will provide students with their scores on both the SAT and ACT, as well as share a detailed report of areas of strength and improvement. Registration is required and space will be limited.

Students should bring their own laptop or Chromebook. If they need to borrow one, they must let the library know in advance by emailing teenservices@wmlnj.org by February 23rd. Participants’ email addresses will be provided to First Choice Prep, so that they can create a free account to take the test and have it scored. Registration is required for this program.

For more information about the library’s upcoming events or to register for the book club or testing program, visit wmlnj.org. and click on the events calendar.
