FH Blue Devils Fall to Summit In UCT Quarterfinal Round, 3-0

October 20 in Westfield marked one of the first cold, windy days of the year as both field hockey teams took the field ready to battle for a spot in the Union County Tournament semifinals. Energy was high, and with the opening whistle, both teams came out strong. Early on, Westfield and Summit traded possessions in a backand- forth struggle. However, after the Summit Hilltoppers scored six minutes into the first quarter, they maintained their momentum and ultimately secured a 3-0 victory.

Heading into the match-up, the outcome was uncertain, with Westfield ranked as the No. 4 seed and Summit at No. 5. The game remained intense, but Summit’s offense proved more consistent. Despite Westfield’s solid defensive efforts that created scoring opportunities, they were unable to capitalize.

The 13-5 Hilltoppers scored once in the first quarter then added one in the third and another in the fourth quarter. Sophomore forward Florence Chapman netted a pair of goals and junior forward Hayley Harrington-Sutton scored once. Senior midfielder Alexis Mollin dished out an assist. Goalkeeper Haley Berger recorded four saves for the 6-9-2 Blue Devils.

Blue Devil Head Coach Corinne Varhley praised several defensive standouts, including seniors Maeve Wojcik and Chloe Martin, junior Caroline Loggie and sophomore Parker Broad. “Our defense was very good at keeping us on offense and dishing it right back to our offensive line. We just weren’t able to capitalize on our opportunities,” said Varhley.

Players echoed that sentiment, noting a drop in intensity as the game progressed. Tri-captain Riley Carr said, “I think we got tired and didn’t cut onto the ball as often. I think that was one of our major downfalls.”

Summit’s defense limited Westfield’s usual number of shots on goal. “Even if they didn’t go in, more shots on goal would have been ideal,” Carr said. Senior Anna Mangold added that one key to improvement is “slowing down and gaining control.”

Earlier in the season, Westfield had defeated Summit, 2–1, which had given the team confidence heading into the rematch. Looking ahead, the Blue Devils aim to approach future games with greater mental and physical readiness. “From start to finish, you have to give 100 percent no matter what,” said Varhley.

Westfield will look to bounce back when they face Columbia this Saturday at noon at Columbia High School.
