Eugene Joseph McGlynn, Jr., known as “Gene” to many, and to many family and friends as “Joe”, passed away on October 15, 2025, at the age of 78.
Born to Eugene J. McGlynn and Gertrude Rose (nee Holl) McGlynn, Gene spent his early years in Westfield, where he attended Holy Trinity Elementary School and Holy Trinity High School. A proud alumnus, he excelled academically and athletically. He loved basketball and was a center at both Holy Trinity H. S. and at The Catholic University of America, graduating in 1969.
Gene had a lifelong passion for learning. He earned a B.S in Electrical Engineering from The Catholic University of America, an M.A. in Western Civilization from Columbia University, and an MBA from Rutgers School of Business. He also studied abroad at the Sorbonne in Paris and the Institute of Europe, becoming fluent in both French and German, languages he taught himself with characteristic discipline and curiosity.
Other hobbies Gene (or Joe) pursued included fly fishing, golf, and tennis among others. He had a passion for history, researching and writing about the origins of World War II and the Axis pact.
Gene was deeply spiritual person, with a strong belief in God and a particular interest in the writings of St. Augustine.
Professionally, Gene built a successful career as an investment banker at Citibank, where he applied his analytical mind and global perspective to the financial world. Gene is predeceased by his brother, Robert, his parents, Eugene J. McGlynn and Gertrude R. McGlynn, and many cousins and friends. Gene is survived by his sister Mary Ellen McGlynn, his brother William McGlynn, his brother Michael McGlynn and his wife, Liisa, and his brother Kevin McGlynn and his wife, Ann.
Family and friends may gather from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, October 24, 2025 at Dooley’s Colonial Home, located at 556 Westfield Ave, Westfield.
A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2025 at the Holy Trinity Church. Westfield. Inurnment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Westfield.
