Throughout his career, writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson has rarely told a contemporary story. He has explored different aspects of America’s past and how they inform the modern world, but only two of his films, 1996’s “Hard Eight” and 1999’s “Magnolia”, take place in the years they were released.
