SCOTCH PLAINS — A 13-year-old child was struck and killed by a landscaping truck while riding an e-bike through the intersection of Mountain Avenue and Mountain View Avenue on Wednesday afternoon.
According to information provided by the Scotch Plains Police Department, the child was immediately transported to the University Hospital in Newark by the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad but sadly succumbed to serious injuries shortly thereafter.
Police say the driver of the truck was located a short distance from the scene of the accident and is cooperating fully with pending investigations.
It is unknown at this time as to whether or not any charges have been filed in connection with the accident.
“This heartbreaking loss is felt across our entire community,” Scotch Plains Mayor Joshua Losardo said via social media, “The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education has been notified, and school leaders are preparing to have counselors available to support students and staff during this difficult time.”
The Township will also be providing counseling and support services to any first responders that were present during the incident.
“At moments like this, it is more important than ever that we come together as a community, to support one another, to lean on each other and to show compassion in the face of tragedy,” Mayor Losardo said, “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of this child. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they endure the unimaginable.”
