Mountainside District Team Secures Championship

MOUNTAINSIDE — The Mountainside Council acknowledged the accomplishments of a district little league team on Tuesday, congratulating the second- and third-graders for their recent championship win.

“The team was assembled and led by Coach Giovanni Cerullo, alongside an outstanding coaching staff including Matt Wasserman, Matt Leonardelli, and Casey LaCasse, representing the dedication of the 7U and 8U level travel team programs,” Councilman Donald Rinaldo said, adding that the team began training in late June with “focus, discipline, and determination” in preparation for the annual District 12 tournament, held in July.

Throughout the summer, the team played against many other Little League teams in New Jersey. They won out over Cranford with a score of 10-8, beat Westfield 12-0 and triumphed over Watchung Hills with a final score of 11-6.

In the semi-finals, they won over Summit 11-0 and made it to the championship match, where they secured a 10-0 win in a rematch against Cranford in just five innings.

“This incredible team made history not only as the first-ever 7U District Championship in Mountainside, but also as just the sixth District Champion in the history of Mountainside and Cal Ripken Baseball, and one of the only three teams of Mountainside ever to achieve this honor,” Mr. Rinaldo said. “We proudly recognize and commend the remarkable achievements of the 2025 7U Mountainside District 12 Championship Baseball Team, whose championship run will be remembered as a shining example of excellence, perseverance, and community spirit.”

The council also discussed e-bike safety – a growing concern among residents – during its regular meeting on Tuesday.

“All riders under 17 years old must wear a helmet while riding any bike,” Mayor Paul Mirabelli said, adding that certain types of e-bikes (specifically Class 3 bikes that can travel at higher speeds) can only be operated by individuals over the age of 15 that posses a valid moped license.

E-Bikes must also be registered with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission and have insurance.
