Dorothea H. Hoffman

Dorothea H. Hoffman, 106, Research Chemist and Teacher

Dorothea Heyl Hoffman of Westfield, New Jersey, passed away after a long illness on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at Fellowship Village, Basking Ridge.

Dr. Hoffman had a distinguished career as a research chemist and chemistry teacher. During 19421952 she was an organic and biochemical research chemist for Merck & Co., Inc. This work, in the group led by Karl Folkers and Stanton Harris, produced twenty-three peer-reviewed papers and twelve patents on which she was author or co- author as Dorothea R. Heyl. Most of these concerned the chemistry of vitamins B6 and B12 and related compounds. Later, for nineteen years beginning in 1965, she taught honors general chemistry, organic chemistry, and advanced-placement chemistry at Westfield (New Jersey) Senior High School. Her excellence as a teacher was recognized with the James Bryant Conant Award in High School Chemistry Teaching by the American Chemical Society at their annual meeting in 1976.

Dorothea R. Heyl was born in Easton, Pennsylvania, in 1919, the second daughter of Marie Ottilie (Keller) Heyl and Herman Frederick Heyl. Both her parents were of German ancestry, with a number of accomplished chemists, engineers, and educators among her mother’s family. She was educated in Easton public schools except for a year spent with relatives in Germany, 19291930. She graduated from Easton High School and entered Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, at the age of sixteen. There she earned three degrees in chemistry: A.B. in 1939, M.A. in 1940, and Ph.D. in 1942. Her Ph.D. research was directed by Arthur C. Cope.

After completing her Ph.D., she was hired by Merck & Co., Inc., Rahway, New Jersey, during World War II, only the second woman hired by Merck into a chemistry professional position. In addition to a successful scientific career, Merck also provided an introduction to another young chemist, Carl H. Hoffman, who was originally from Mendota, Illinois. They married in 1946, eventually settling in a house they designed and had built in Scotch Plains. After ten years at Merck she retired for the first time to raise two children born in the 1950s, Edith and Carl E. During this period she was also an ambitious gardener, creating asparagus and raspberry beds that were the envy of the neighborhood, and a Girl Scout volunteer. Much of her time and energy was required in coping with the challenges of Carl E.’s intellectual disability and medical needs. She was a supportive Mom who made sure her children had every possible opportunity to learn and grow.

After the children were in school she resumed professional activity, first part-time as a staff chemist for Chemical Research Associates in Bernardsville, New Jersey, then as a full-time teacher at Westfield Senior High School. There she enjoyed teaching hundreds of bright, motivated students who appreciated her carefully- developed courses, thorough knowledge and preparation, and diligent feedback. She was an active member and officer of the New Jersey Science Teachers Association, a member of the American Chemical Society and of the New Jersey Education Association, and a Fellow and Life Member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. After her second retirement in 1984, she began a third (unpaid) career as a civic volunteer. She served on the governing boards of the Rahway & Plainfield Friends Meeting, the Trailside Museum Association, the Oakwood Friends School, The Greater Watchung Nature Club, The McCutchen Friends’ Residence and Nursing Home, and Learning for Life Plainfield, and was an active member and volunteer with the New York Yearly Friends Meeting and The Arc of Union County. She was also an enthusiastic supporter of Bryn Mawr College, serving as a class collector for many years.

In addition to her professional, civic, and family interests, she enjoyed opera, nature, hiking, traveling, and photography. She and Carl H. made a month-long camping road trip to the western U.S. in 1949 after he finished his Ph.D.; they spent the most on gasoline, and the second-most on slide film. She subsequently traveled all over the United States — for pleasure, sightseeing and learning, to visit her children and other family and friends, and for professional meetings. Once both children were out of the nest, trips to Europe, Hawaii, and Australia followed.

She was predeceased by her husband, Carl H. Hoffman; her sister, Marie H. (Chickie) Shain, and her brother, Harry K. Heyl. She was also predeceased by her son, Carl E. Hoffman, and her nephew, Charles E. (Corky) Shain. She is survived by her daughter, Edith H. Konopka, and sonin- law, John; nephews William G. Shain, Jr., John H. Shain, Harry K. (Kel) Heyl, Jr., Lawrence F. Heyl, and Jeffrey E. Heyl; and many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 25, at Memorial Funeral Home in Fanwood, N.J. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, at the Rahway & Plainfield Friends Meetinghouse, 225 Watchung Avenue, Plainfield, N.J. Burial will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Memorial Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, her family requests memorial contributions to The Arc of Union County, 70 Diamond Road, Springfield, N.J. 07081.
