Robert Benacchio Named to Second Term As BOE Pres.

WESTFIELD — Robert Benacchio, who was recently reelected to the Westfield Board of Education (BOE) alongside running mates Kristen Sonnek-Schmelz and Mary Wickens, was appointed to a second term as board president during the group’s annual reorganization meeting last week.

“Rob is committed to transparency and communication with the community and is an eager participant in all Westfield-school-related events,” board member Leila Morrelli said after nominating Mr. Benacchio for the position. “I have found him to be not only approachable, but thoughtful and reasonable. His governance has been organized as well as compassionate, and it is clear that he values all stakeholders and considers all perspectives.”

Mr. Benacchio, who was first elected to the board three years ago, thanked his colleagues for their support.

“We have a lot to get done,” he said. “We have referendum projects to get moving on, we have curriculum to continue to improve, and we have a district to continue to be proud of. Looking forward to it.”

Mr. Benacchio, Ms. Sonnek-Schmelz and Ms. Wickens were each sworn in to new, three-year terms last week.

Ms. Sonnek-Schmelz, who also joined the board three years ago, was named as this year’s vice president with the unanimous support of the rest of the BOE.

“Over the past three years on the board, Kristen has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership, dedication and insight,” board member Sonal Patel said.

The board also approved a number of stipends to teachers, staff members and athletic coaches for the 20252026 school year, approved amended curricula and awarded new contracts for professional services.

In addition, Mr. Benacchio announced last week that the girls’ flag football team, which has successfully completed its mandated probationary period, will become a varsitylevel program next year.

“I’d like to thank the coaches and all of the participants for bringing that program to where it is,” he said.

The board will hold its final two meetings of the 2024-2025 school year on Tuesday, May 20, and Tuesday, June 17, at 7 p.m., in the highschool cafeteria.
