IN SESSION

At this time of the year, we all experience change. The weather changes, time changes, lifestyle changes. Most of us can adjust in a healthy way while some really struggle with these changes. In general, many of us just don’t like change of any kind.

We know that change is inevitable. Even with this knowledge we can resist rather than accept change. If you think about your life, it has been filled with change. Leaving home to go to college, getting married, having children, or changing jobs or careers. Perhaps an illness or disability affecting your lifestyle. Despite the discomfort, we know change is often necessary. Nothing changes if nothing changes.

We resist change for many reasons, often due to fear. We begin to project an outcome and “what if” our changes. What if I fail? What if I don’t like it? What if others don’t like me? What if I’m not happy? The real question is, what if you do nothing and do not change a thing? Is it better to stay in the unfulfilled job…stay at home and never move out on your own…don’t start the next phase of your life…refuse medications that may help…would you feel better? We don’t know.

We do know that fear is a great motivation killer. Considering your own situation and making your own decisions is not always the road of least resistance. It does not guarantee any particular outcome but, you tried. To thine own self be true. Follow your gut, your heart, even if you are fearful. Most of us look back at these moments and can assess that “it” wasn’t as bad as we thought. Not always, but often.

You loved your college experience, made friends although fearful you wouldn’t. The job you thought was out of your league was a great experience that continues today. Your relationship and the natural ups and downs are worth it. Your kids are a great source of love and happiness and you’d be lost without them. This all requires big change!

Don’t let fear take the lead in your decisions. Stay focused and hopeful. Seek out support as you tackle changes. You often don’t have to do it alone. Remember, the beauty of the butterfly is only after great change!
