Library to Welcome 2025 With Activities For All

GARWOOD — The Garwood Public Library will kick off the new year with a month-long series of activities for all ages. Located at 411 Third Avenue, the library is open Monday and Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The library is closed on Sundays and also will be closed on Wednesday, January 1, for New Year’s Day and Monday, January 20, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The Knitting Club will meet on the Mondays of January 6, 13 and 27, at 10:30 a.m. Participants can learn how to knit or show others how it is done while enjoying fun conversation. This program is open to all levels and no registration is required. Yarn and needles are provided to newcomers.

Kid’s Chess also will be held on January 6, 13 and 27, at 3 p.m. This activity comprises informal chess games for children of all ages, offered as non-instructional, supervised play. No registration is required but participation is limited to 12.

Storytime will take place on the Tuesdays of January 7, 14, 21 and 28, at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Toddlers and their caregivers are invited to join Miss Maryanne for stories and more. Registration is required and limited to 12. To register, visit the library website events calendar at https://garwoodpl.org/ or call the library at (908) 789-1670.

Grab and Go Kid’s Craft will be available on Tuesday, January 7, at 3 p.m. Participants may pick up supplies and instructions for a seasonal craft. Registration is required for craft kits and is limited to 15 participants. To sign up, visit the website calendar or call the library.

“Make a Harmonica” also will be presented on January 7, at 3:30 p.m. Participants will learn how to make a harmonica, while supplies last.

RummiKub for Adults is planned for Thursday, January 9, at 1 p.m. Rummikub is a rummy-like game that is played with tiles instead of cards. This program is open to all levels and no registration is needed. Participation is limited to 12.

Fantastic Forces will be featured on the Thursdays of January 9, 16, 23 and 30, at 3 p.m. Children in grades 2 to 6 learn how tiny, invisible particles — electrons — power everything from the refrigerator to the phone. They also learn about insulators and conductors and experiment to find out what conducts. All their problem-solving skills are put to use to create series and parallel circuits. Once children master circuits, they use their new knowhow to engineer a device that can solve mysterious hidden connections. Registration is required and participation limited to 10.

Grab and Go Adult Craft is scheduled for Tuesday, January 14, at 3 p.m. Participants can pick up supplies and instructions for a seasonal craft. Registration is required for craft kits and is limited to 15 participants. To sign up, visit the library’s website calendar or call the library.

LEGO Club will meet on Wednesday, January 15, at 3 p.m. Participants may take inspiration from the month’s theme or build whatever comes to mind. Some creations will be displayed in the library showcase. Registration is required and limited to 12. To register, visit the website calendar.

The Monday Book Club will meet on January 27 at 1 p.m. Participants will engage in a lively discussion of the month’s book, “The Nature of the Beast,” by Louise Penny.
