Two highly talented teams needed someone to step into the action at the right time as the No. 3 Scotch Plains-Fanwood Raiders and the Ridgewood Maroon drifted a 2-2 tie into the second overtime during the Group 4 semifinal game in Scotch Plains on November 19. An unexpected hero did indeed emerge when freshman Aavik Akarte entered the game in the overtime, received a right-to-left cross into the box from co-captain Jack Sponheimer and struck gold with 2:24 on the clock to earn the 19-1-2 Raiders the 3-2 triumph.
