WF’s Giacone Gets UCF Hall of Fame Nod

Mark Giacone’s legacy at the University of Central Florida stands as a testament to resilience, athletic prowess, and an indomitable spirit. Inducted into the UCF Football Hall of Fame, the Westfield native carved a path of excellence during his time as a Knight, where his record-breaking performances and inspiring comeback from injury solidified him as one of UCF’s most celebrated athletes.

Joining the UCF Knights as a freshman in 1987, Giacone made an immediate impact. He led the team with 544 rushing yards and helped propel UCF to the Division II playoffs, demonstrating the kind of leadership that would define his career. His freshman season also saw him set a single-game record of 177 rushing yards, tying the school record for most touchdowns in a game. His contributions on the field set the stage for a legacy that would inspire future generations of Knights.

The following year, Giacone’s journey faced an unexpected challenge.A season-ending knee injury in 1988 could have derailed his career, but his determination only grew stronger. Through grit and dedication, Giacone returned in 1989 to reclaim his place in the starting lineup, outperforming even future UCF Hall of Famers. He became the team’s leading rusher once again, a feat he would accomplish three times throughout his career – the first player in UCF history to do so.

But it was in 1990 that Giacone truly cemented his status as a legend. That season, he rushed for a schoolrecord 1,269 yards, becoming the first Knight to surpass 1,000 yards in a single season, all while averaging 5.7 yards per carry. His outstanding performance included a breathtaking 191-yard game against Youngstown State, leading UCF to a thrilling 2017 playoff victory and earning him national recognition alongside future football stars like Ty Detmer and Carl Pickens. For his efforts, he was named the National College Football Player of the Week, a testament to his incredible impact on the field.

Giacone’s achievements did not end with his rushing records. His accolades spanned two Team MVP awards in 1989 and 1990, recognition from USAToday as a two-time I-AAPlayer of the Week, and honors as Central Florida Player of the Year by the Orlando Amateur Athletic Association. His fearlessness, even at 5-foot-8 and 195 pounds, earned him the nickname “Magnet Man,” as he was known to seek contact even in the open field.

Over his career, Giacone amassed an impressive 2,508 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns, holding multiple school records that have withstood the test of time. As of his induction in 2024, he ranks ninth in career rushing yards and sixth in touchdowns, a lasting testament to his exceptional impact on UCF football.

Mark Giacone’s journey from a promising freshman to a UCF Hall of Fame inductee is a story of passion, perseverance, and profound dedication to his team and the sport. His legacy as a UCF Knight endures, inspiring players and fans alike as he takes his place among the legends of UCF football.
