Candidates File BOE Nominating Petitions

AREA — Candidates hoping to secure positions as members of their local school boards have filed their petitions to appear on the ballot this November.

Five candidates — Thomas Maye, Robert Smorol, Jr., Dino Bencivenga, Jarred B. Preiss and Seamus Patrick O’Toole — will vie for three, threeyear terms on the Clark Board of Education (BOE). Mr. Smorol and Mr. Bencivenga, both incumbents, will be joined by Mr. Maye, a newcomer, under the slogan “Traditional Values.” Mr. O’Toole will campaign with the message that “Parents Know Better,” while Mr. Preiss’slogan will be “Committed to Education.” Scott Bohm did not file to run for reelection.

In Cranford, incumbents William B. Hulse, the board’s current vice president, and Jessica Soltys will be running alongside newcomer John McGovern to fill three, three-year terms.

Four Scotch Plains candidates — incumbents Karen Kulikowski, Tonya Williams and Debora Brody, along with newcomer John Greenblatt — will vie for three, three-year terms on the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education. Fanwood’s two seats on the board — currently occupied by board membersAmy Boroff andAmy Winkler — are not part of this year’s election cycle.

In Garwood, five candidates — incumbents April Farrell, the current board president, and Salvatore Piarulli, plus newcomers Tracey McCarrick, Michael Sasjack and Vincent Fumero — will face off for three, three-year terms. Board member Jennifer Uva will not be seeking re-election.

Mountainside incumbents Jordan Hyman and Candice Schiano are both running unopposed to secure new, three-year terms on their district’s board.

Westfield, which also will be putting a capital bond referendum question to its voters, will hold its next election in April of 2025.

This year’s election will be held on Tuesday, November 5.
