On Saturday, April 13, Israel, a key U.S. ally, faced a significant attack from Iran. More than 300 missiles and drones targeted Israel, originating from launch points in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Lebanon. This aggressive action solidifies Iran and other Middle Eastern nations’ position on the wrong side of history. Thankfully, Congressman Tom Kean of NJ-07 has chosen to stand on the side of moral justice.
As a member of the Westfield Jewish Community, I am deeply troubled by the persistent violence against the Jewish people, evident even six months after the October 7 attacks. Recent incidents of anti-Semitic behavior at Westfield High School, where I am a student, have created a sense of fear and unease. However, hearing Congressman Kean’s unwavering support for Israel in his recent speech gives me hope that change is possible. In response to Iran’s aggression, Congressman Kean emphasized, ‘We must stand shoulder to shoulder with our friend and ally, Israel.’ Just as the U.S. supports Israel, I stand in solidarity with my peers and teachers, not just as a Jew but as an American Jew.
In a climate where a nation’s right to self-defense is unjustly criticized, Congressman Kean’s courage in making this statement is commendable. Moreover, his proactive approach is evident in the introduction of House Resolution 1143, condemning Iran’s attack and affirming Israel’s right to defend itself. To combat the rising tide of anti-Semitism, starting at the local level is crucial, which is why Congressman Kean has my full support and appreciation.
