WESTFIELD — On Friday December 29, at 10:27 p.m., the Westfield Fire Department responded to the report of smoke in the structure in the 300 block of Mountain Avenue. The first Westfield Fire Department apparatus arrived on scene at 10:30 p.m., to find a 2 1/2 story single family dwelling, with a heavy smoke condition on the first floor. Confirming the residence was evacuated, crews began to search for the main body of fire. Fire was located and extinguished with extensive overhaul operations to limit additional fire spread.
Union County Fire Mutual Aid companies were requested to the scene, along with resources to stage at Fire Headquarters to cover the town for additional calls. The Westfield Police Department assisted with security, traffic, and evacuating the residence upon arrival. The Westfield Rescue Squad assisted in providing firefighter rehabilitation. No injuries were reported.
The fire was placed under control at 11:12 p.m., with fire department personnel operating on scene into the early morning hours. The fire was investigated by the Westfield Fire Prevention Bureau. The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental in nature.
