Concerns Regarding Brookside Park Improvements, Artificial Turf Field

Concerns Regarding Brookside Park Improvements, Artificial Turf Field

I am writing to express my deep reservations about the proposed Brookside Park improvements in Scotch Plains, particularly the plan to install an artificial turf field, which is on the ballot this election day. While the goal of enhancing our community spaces is admirable, the proposed cost of $3.8 million is exorbitant, and the decision to install artificial turf raises important concerns about its long-term sustainability.

Firstly, let us address the financial aspect. At a time when our community is facing multiple economic challenges and uncertainties, allocating such a substantial sum of money to renovate a park is difficult to justify. The cost of $3.8 million could be better utilized to address more immediate and pressing needs within our town, such as flood mitigation, road repair, or back in your pocket.

Moreover, the decision to install an artificial turf field raises significant concerns about the ongoing maintenance and replacement costs. It is well-documented that artificial turf fields have a limited lifespan, typically needing replacement every eight to 10 years. This replacement can be a significant financial burden on our community, as it often requires a substantial investment. Additionally, there are environmental concerns associated with artificial turf fields, including the disposal of old turf materials and the potential for harmful chemicals used in their production to leach into the environment. We should carefully consider the ecological impact of such a decision.

Furthermore, the safety and health implications of artificial turf fields, especially for young athletes, have been a subject of debate. Some studies suggest that the heat generated by artificial turf can lead to increased risk of heat-related illnesses. The infill materials used in some artificial turf fields have also raised concerns about potential health risks.

I urge the residents of Scotch Plains to weigh these concerns carefully and to consider whether the proposed expenditure and the installation of an artificial turf field align with the best interests of our community. We should prioritize fiscal responsibility and the long-term well-being of our town over hasty decisions that may have unintended consequences.

As election day approaches, I encourage our fellow citizens to exercise their right to vote thoughtfully, keeping in mind the financial implications and potential drawbacks of these proposed park improvements. Let us demand accountability and explore alternative solutions that are more cost-effective and sustainable in the long run.

In conclusion, while I share the desire to improve our community spaces, I believe that the proposed $3.8 million expenditure, coupled with the installation of an artificial turf field, raises legitimate concerns that should not be overlooked. We owe it to ourselves and future generations to make informed decisions that prioritize fiscal responsibility, environmental stewardship, and the safety of our residents.
