A baby’s cry sounds in the background as the scene opens to a small, one-bedroom apartment in Kabul, Afghanistan, sometime after the American troops pulled out of Afghanistan. Thus begins the fascinating play, Selling Kabul, by Sylvia Khoury, produced by Premiere Stages at Kean University. This 100minute play tackles the difficult topic of the aftermath of America’s troop withdrawal from the war that lasted from 2001 – 2021. Taliban victories across that country escalated America’s retreat and, unfortunately, not all the Afghanistan interpreters were afforded their promised visas to come to America. How soon we forget the tragedy of that situation and the people left behind.
STOICISM AT ITS HIGHEST LEVEL… Jawid (Afsheen Misaghi) and Afiya (Atra Asdou) play a husband and wife in Kabul, Afghanistan, in Premiere Stages’ 2023 production of Selling Kabul. These characters face persecution for secretly housing her brother, Taroon (Zaven Ovian), a former American translator, after the city of Kabul falls to the Taliban. The riveting, 100-minute, real-time play runs weekends at the Bauer Boucher Theatre Center at Kean University through September 24. For tickets, visit kean.vbotickets.com. The theatre is handicapped accessible. Courtesy of Mike Peters
